Here are some of the upcoming opportunities in the

Ridgeland Student Ministry:

Wednesday Night Live! will start next Wednesday, September 16th, from 6:30-8PM. We'll have time to hang out, eat some food, reconnect with friends, and start off our new 6 week series "Welcome to the Planet!"

Week 1: The Challenge

Week 3: Playing Your Part

Week 4: Seeing Your True Self

Week 5: Knowing Your Purpose

Week 6: Living Your Mission

RSM Annual Kick-off Bonfire is Friday, September 18th, from 7:30-10PM. This is an excellent event for students to bring their friends and get a "flavor" of the student ministry. Our bonfire is a "potluck" event and we ask students to bring a snack to pass. RSM will provide the drinks.

Friday & Saturday, June 26th - 27th
For ALL Jr. & Sr. High Students!

Depart RCC @ 6:30PM on Friday
Arrive @ RCC 7:30AM on Saturday

Events included:
Bowling, inflatable bounce-a-rounds,
Rochester Sports Garden, minature golf,
dodgeball, and more!

Cost is $30, which includes admission,
transportation, and awesome breakfast!
(For families with more than one student,
cost is $30 for first student, $25 for each
additional student...)

Here are some recent updates on programming...

Two things are happening this Sunday, June 7th. First, the Sr. High Cookout from 6PM - 8PM at my new house.

The address is 271 Lettington Ave, Rochester, NY 14624.

If students need help with rides to and fro, please contact me. This is our last Sr. High Night for the Summer. Also, the Sr. High Cedar Point permission slips are due this Sunday. These are necessary in our final preparations.

Our last WNL! is next Wednesday, June 10th, at it's regular time. We will be doing "Messy Game Night" and students should come prepared to get messy (i.e. wear old clothes).

We are planning a "School's Out Blowout All-nighter" for both Jr. & Sr. High students in conjunction with other churches. It will be Friday, June 26th, to Saturday, June 27th.

(1) We are continuing our "i-Life" series in the Jr. & Sr. High. If you're interested in what we're talking about, check out student blog (www.rccstudentministries.blogspot.com)!

(2) We're cookin' out for Memorial Day! Sr. High this Sunday, May 24th @ RCC from 6PM - 8PM; Jr. High next Wednesday, May 27th @ RCC from 6PM - 8PM. Cost is $2 (helps cover food & drink) and new friends can eat for free!

(3) Our final Sr. High Night is Sunday, June 7th. Our final Jr. High WNL! is Wednesday, June 10th. We're planning a "Messy Game Night" for 6/10, including a shaving cream fight and other messy games along with a slip-n-slide. Students who participate should come wearing old clothes. It will be a good, messy time! We will kick up our summer programs after VBS (June 29th - July2nd).

(4) If your student is helping out with VBS and has brought home a Ridgeland Volunteer form and you have questions, please do not hesitate to email/call me! I will be glad to field any questions or concerns you may have.

(5) If you haven't heard from your Sr. High student yet, we're planning a Sr. High Road Trip to Cedar Point (July 5th - 7th). Information packets and permission form are now available! Let me know if you need one. Permission form is due no later than Sunday, June 7th. Spots are limited.

(6) Save the Date! The Youth Ministry Annual Camping Trip is August 21st - 23rd. This is open to any student who will be in grades 6-12 during the upcoming school year.

How are your relationships? Whether it would be with our parents, brothers and sisters, friends at school and church, wherever and whatever, we all have relationships with others. The tough thing is that they seem harder than what they should be, sometimes leading us down the wrong path or breaking us down. Relationships can just be downright messy and painful at times.

What does God think about relationships, anyway? And why does He command us to love others - even our enemies - when it's just so dang hard? How can we find better relationships with others that doesn't lead to hurt?

Join us these next few weeks as we start a new series called
"i-Life: 5 Relationship Rules to Living Life to the Fullest"
and discover how God intended us to do life with one another.

Ridgeland Community Church

5 students from Ridgeland participated
Total $$$ raised = $450 to help poverty!
$450 = 1 child having food/clothing/basic
medical care for 15 months!

Lakeshore & Ridgeland Combined

75 Students total participated
Total $$$ Raised = approximately $5,000
$5k = 13 children having food/clothing/
basic medical care for a year!

Youth Ministry Reminders...

Here are a few things going on in the youth ministry
at Ridgeland Community Church:

(1) There is a Good Friday Service this Friday, April 10th. This is a church-wide event held at Word of Life Church on Pinnacle Road at 7PM.

(2) There is no Sunday AM class this Sunday, April 12th, for both jr. and sr. high students.

(3) There is no Sr. High Night this Sunday, April 12th OR next Sunday, April 19th due to Easter and Spring Break.

(4) WNL! will be meeting tonight, April 8th, and next Wednesday, April 15th. There is no WNL! on Wednesday, April 22nd.

Lastly, I recently challenged our students to be reading Mark 11 - 16 throughout this week to get a glimpse of Jesus' journey to the Cross. The Gospel writers give much of their account to just this week of His life and its importance can never be overstated. I encourage you as well to journey through the biblical accounts of Holy Week as we prepare to remember and celebrate the work of Christ in our lives.

If you are planning on participating in the 30 Hour Famine
tomorrow and Saturday, here are a few last minute
things to keep in mind as you get packing...

(1) Your last meal is lunch tomorrow (3/27). Afterward,
you can no longer eat food (I know, crazy)!
You may have juice, however.
.
(2) Bring all your donations with you.
.
(3) If you're getting a ride from RCC, be there at 5:15PM.
If you're meeting us at Lakeshore, plan on being there
at 6:15PM at the latest.
.
(4) The address to Lakeshore Community Church is:

(5) We are finished at 6:30PM on Saturday.
You may get a ride home from Lakeshore at that time
OR make sure to have your parents pick you
up at RCC at 7PM.

and not artificial stuff - go for nutrition.

30 Hour Famine

COMING MARCH 27th & 28th...

Sponsored by World Vision, the 30 Hour Famine is a
national event that raises awareness of global poverty and hunger.
Students from across the nation will band together to raise money
to help feed those who are in desperate need of basic food
items across the world as well as participate in
local community service projects.

In addition, students will get the "feel" for what it means
to be truly hungry, to fast from food for 30 hours,
and experience God in a unique, amazing way.
.
Students in grades 6-12 can participate in this overnight
event that's working in conjunction with the student ministry
at Lakeshore Community Church in Greece, NY.
.
Initial materials and consent form are now available in the youth room
or talk to John for details. Make sure to check out the websites as well!

Polar Wave Update

A few reminders about our upcoming trip to

Polar Wave on February 17th:

(1) Students cannot bring a packed lunch into their facilities.

Accordingly, students need to:

(a) eat prior to arrival at RCC,

(b) bring extra $$$ to purchase food at Polar Wave,

(2) The cost is $10 per student. If more than one student is coming

from the same family, the cost is $10 for the first student,

$6 per each additional student.

(i.e. 3 kids = $22)

(3) Each student needs a completed

RCC permission form AND a Polar Wave waiver form.

I will send both out in an email as well as have extra

copies readily available on Sunday morning.

Instead, students need to bring a few extra dollars with

them if they want to eat lunch at Polar Wave.

before coming to RCC that day.

Youth Room Work Day

Saturday, January 17th, we will be doing some minor home improvements in the youth room in order to provide more usable space for our students. Some of the projects include: dismantling the cabinets and painting the upstairs hallway, moving storage items and painting the new room, and fixing our "beautiful" outside door.

These much need projects will help the youth ministry accomplish its goals while providing a space for our students that is theirs to call home. If you can help us in this, we greatly appreciate it. The project runs on Saturday, January 17th, from 10AM - 2PM. Lunch is included! Please contact John if you are able to help.

Our current needs:

Painters (painting supplies will be provided!)

People & tools able to take down upstairs cabinets

People & tools able to fix or replace outside door

People & tools (sawzall) able to cut out fixed door

"Why?"

Growing up, we all inevitably go through the "why?" stage, trying to make sense of the daily things that happen around us. We's ask questions like Why does dad go to work? Why can't I touch the hot stove? Why is the sky blue? Why can't I do that? Admit it... you remember those days and you also recall how it drove other people crazy. But this stage of life is often crucial to our basic understandings of why we do what we do and how we go about doing them.

Tomorrow night, we're starting a 5 week series called "Why?" in attempts to unpack why the youth ministry even exists and how we'll go about accomplishing our purposes.

Based on the Greatest Commandment (Matthew 22:37-40) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20), "the RCC Student Ministry exists for five simple reasons: to REACH out to teenagers with the love of Christ, CONNECT them with other believers, help them GROW in their faith, EQUIP them for service, and UNLEASH them to lead the next generation to Christ."

As you may know, the youth Christmas party is rescheduled for this Wednesday, December 10th. We're just going to hang out, eat some food, and do a rather crazy gift exchange. Students should bring a wrapped gift that's $5 or less. Parents, if you want to send a long some sort of a snack, that would be greatly appreciated! However, please don't feel obligated.

Meet at Marketplace Mall (in parking lot) at 5PM.

We'll serve until 7PM and hangout at the mall until 8PM.

Here's the scoop on the event:

Day Of Hope Food & Goods Drive

December 5th & 6th Marketplace Mall parking lot

(at the intersection of Hylan Drive and Jefferson Road)

Collection hours are Friday 5pm - Saturday 5pm

Help us collect coffee, creamer, sugar, coffee filters, copy paper, #10 window and plain envelopes, paper towels, bathroom tissue, facial tissue, napkins, garbage bags, latex gloves, pillows, pillow cases, twin & double bed sheets, blankets, bath & hand towels, shampoo, powdered laundry soap, bleach, liquid dish soap, 8 oz. styrofoam cups, plastic forks, spoons & knives. Clothing for men, women and children are also welcomed. Monetary donations are appreciated as well.

Here are some FAQs regarding this Friday's event:

How many friends can I bring?

There is no limit as to how many friends you bring! If you are bringing friends, however, try to let me know beforehand so I can purchase enough food. Just email me at jcleghorn@ridgelandchurch.org or let me know on Wednesday night.

Does my friend have to pay for rental skates?

For your friends, I will cover the $4 to skate. If they need rental skates, they will need to cover the $3. If for some reason your friends can't cover the cost, please speak with me privately - I'll make sure they're taken care of.

What are the details again?
The session goes from 8-10PM @ RIT Ice Arena. Please use the lower-level entrance located just off Parking Lot D. Parents, please be prepared to pick up your student promptly at 10PM.

How often do we get caught up with what's going on in our life and our goals that we fail to see what's around us? Sometimes we could be missing opportunities...when we fail to observe what's going on around us we fail to act in ways to helps others.

If someone is hurting and we don't see it...how can we encourage them?

If someone is hungry and we don't see it...how can we feed them?

If someone is lonely and we don't see it...how can we befriend them?

Wednesday Night Live! Update

Last weekend, I attended the National Youth Workers Convention in Pittsburgh, PA. It was a great time to connect to other youth workers in the United States and learn from the veterans the ins-and-outs of ministry. One thing that was of particular interest to me was the discussions we had on today's youth. According to the veterans, today's youth are:

· Often misunderstood
· Often misunderstanding
· Not only wanting to know how, but why…
· Searching for spiritual things – something bigger then themselves.
· Want something to commit to, to be a part of
· But Church is often a struggle, seeming irrelevant and boring
· Tired of cliché, same-old stuff messages
· Dislike fake, hypocritical, and phony people

This got me thinking... don't all of us sometimes feel that way?

This past Wednesday Night, we began to discuss the issue of moving closer to God and the struggles that seem to go along with it. Sometimes we dislike the things we do as Christians because they're not really fun. Sometimes we dislike the things we do because they don't make any sense. Sometimes reading the Bible is more tiresome than life-changing, making us feel like it has no implication for our lives today. But instead of rising to the challenge of promoting change, more often than not we stick ourselves in a rut and inwardly wrestle with God.

Jesus calls us to something more, to a bigger life than just making in through each day. Life is more than a routine, a set schedule of rising in the morning and doing the daily tasks. Christianity is more than just reading a few passages out of the Bible and attending Church on Sunday - it's about seeing God. Jesus spoke this quite simply when He said, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God" (Matt. 5:8). God doesn't care so much for our words or our actions. He doesn't care how much money we make nor what we wear - He's to be at the very core of our heart. He's to be what we breathe, what we feel, what we think. Our everything is to be His.

As a youth ministry, we're going to continue looking into this idea of growing closer with God and hopefully answer some of the questions we have. Remember, Wednesday Night Live! meets at 6:30PM on Wednesday nights...

We're continuing our series on the Beatitudes, tonight being:

"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy." (5:7)

Some questions to think about:

(1) What does it mean to be "merciful?"

(2) What sort of attitude is Jesus teaching us to have?

(3) What does being "merciful" look like in my everyday life?

(4) What sort of grudges or frustrations exists that may be holding me back from the life God wants for me?

Last week, Luke Cymbal spoke a message on what it is to be meek. He shared with us that meekness, by definition, is simply demonstrating humility in our actions towards others. By being meek (or humble), we demonstrate that we are people who recognize their need for God and His provision. We realize that we are nothing without God and must depend on Him daily.

Tonight, our very own Rei Pizarro will be sharing about his recent trip to the Dominican Republic. Rei is a volunteer through Compassion International, an organization that is committed to providing basic life necessities to children and families in need while sharing the truth of Jesus.

What does "meek" even mean, anyway?

For the past few weeks we've been studying the Beatitudes (Matthew 5). Last week we talked about the mourning and discovered that they are those people who recognize their mistakes and faults, seek forgiveness, and turn to Jesus to be comforted. We unpacked the truth that the Cross is no longer just a symbol of His death, but our hope and life. Through Jesus and the Cross, we can be forgiven and be comforted.

Tonight, Luke Cymbal will be sharing with us the next Beatitude:

"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth." (Mt. 5:5)

We'll also discuss the intended reasons behind our study. Some questions to think about in regards to the background are:

(1) Who was Jesus teaching? In respect to their ethnicity, what sort of things would they be wanting to know from Jesus?

(2) Why are the Beatitudes important, anyway? What's the big deal?

(3) How should they affect our lives for the better? What changes should be made?

(4) Can I see the Beatitudes demonstrated in my life and the life of others?

"Blessed are those who mourn..."

Last week, we touched on the first Beatitude and came to the conclusion that to be "poor in spirit" means to simply recognize that we don't have what it takes within ourselves to please God. We all make mistakes, live unperfect lives, and need to depend on God for everything. He is the source of all our eyes can see, including our very own lives. And He is the source of salvation, giving us a second chance to being in relationship with Him through Jesus. Being "poor in spirit" simply means to remember that we must constantly depend on God!

Tonight we'll be looking into the second Beatitude Jesus teaches:

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."
(Matthew 5:4)

Some questions to consider:

(1) What does it mean to "mourn" and what does that look like in everyday life?

(2) What are they mourning about, anyway?

(3) What should my attitude be as a result?

We're starting a series on the Beatitudes, trying to discover what Jesus really meant and how they should affect our lives today. Found in Matthew 5, tonight will focus on the first...

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:3).

Some questions to consider are:

(1) Who are the "poor in spirit" and what does that mean?

(2) What does it teach me about myself, my relationship with others, and with God?

(3) Am I living as one who is "poor in spirit"? If not, why?

Our Purpose

The RCC Student Ministry exists for five simple reasons: to REACH OUT to teenagers with the love of Christ, CONNECT them with other believers, help them GROW in their faith, EQUIP them for service, and UNLEASH them to lead the next generation to Christ.

The Purpose of this Blog:
- to keep students and parents up to date with student ministry events, news, and teachings
- to post random, funny, or insightful information
- post embarrassing pictures
- to increase the communication and unity of the student ministry's members and parents

This site will be updated as often as possible, hopefully a minimum of once a week, excluding weeks where John may be out of town or the youth are on a mission trip or week long event.
